Construction staff: when two people are missing tomorrow at seven
The crane operator calls in sick at 05:40, the concrete pour is scheduled for tomorrow, and the follow-on trades are already in the programme. You have a list of people who used to work for you – just no time to call them. An AI phone agent takes exactly that part off your hands.
On a building site every hour counts twice
A missing person on site is rarely just a missing person. Crane hire keeps running, the concrete supplier has a slot, the follow-on trade has its date, and at the end comes the question of construction delay. Finding a replacement is therefore not an HR task but a scheduling task – and schedules do not wait in a phone queue.
Almost every construction firm already has the right pool: former temps, seasonal workers, people from the last large site, pensioners who are happy to do a few more days. What is missing is the half hour to call forty of them – at precisely the moment the site manager is already at the limit.
The call you never make is the expensive one: in practice, when someone drops out only the five or six best known numbers get called. If they decline, the pool counts as «empty». In reality 90 per cent of the list was never asked.
What the agent has to clarify on a construction job
- Role and experience: bricklayer, labourer, formwork carpenter, steel fixer, scaffolder, civil engineering – and whether the person has done this kind of job before
- Licences and certificates: crane licence, forklift licence, plant operator, fall protection, valid training records – including the expiry question
- Start and duration: 07:00 on site or meeting point at the yard, expected duration in days
- Travel: own vehicle, lift from the yard or public transport
- Equipment: personal protective equipment available, shoe size for loan gear
- Terms: confirmation of hourly rate and expenses as on the last assignment
All of it lands structured in a table or directly in your scheduling system – not as a note in the cab.
What a call sounds like
AI: «Good morning Ms Brunner, this is the digital assistant of Muster Construction Ltd. From tomorrow we need support in formwork in Aarau for about three days, starting 07:00 at the yard. Would that be possible for you?»
Ms Brunner: «Three days – yes, that would work. Is it the same site as in May?»
AI: «No, the new one on Industriestrasse. You had a crane licence on file with us – is that still valid?»
Ms Brunner: «Yes, until next year.»
AI: «Perfect. I will put you down for Wednesday to Friday, 34 francs an hour plus expenses as usual. Address and contact person will follow by text. Thank you!»
Multilingual is not an extra on a building site
Swiss sites run in German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Albanian, French and English – often within a single crew. A call run that only works in one language loses exactly the people who would be available at the shortest notice. Store the preferred language on the contact and the agent runs the conversation in it from the first word. Anyone answering in Swiss German is understood as well – dialect is the core competence of the Suisse Line speech recognition.
The reverse case: bad weather and rescheduling
Finding staff is only one direction. On a building site the other one comes up just as often: the job is cancelled and twelve people need to know tonight. That is a call run too, just with a different message. The agent informs everyone in parallel, captures questions and flags the people it could not reach, so the foreman makes two calls instead of twelve.
| Situation | What the run does | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|
| Sickness in the morning | call the pool by qualification, stop after two confirmations | 10–20 minutes |
| Scaling up a large site | call the whole pool, collect availability for next week | 30–60 minutes |
| Bad weather cancellation | inform everyone scheduled, get acknowledgement | 5–15 minutes |
| Keeping the pool current | ask quarterly who is still available | runs in the background |
What it adds up to
Example calculation: one day of absence
Run across 80 numbers, around 40 talk minutes × CHF 0.39 ≈ CHF 16
Against that: a day with an under-staffed crew, crane hire, a postponed pour and the follow-on trade.
The comparison is lopsided – that is precisely the point. The cost of the run is not the relevant factor; what matters is whether you find the replacement in time.
Prices are transparent on the Pricing page: platform from CHF 1'980 per year with 100 free minutes per month, additional minutes from CHF 0.39.
The legal side, briefly
You are calling people who have already worked for you or signed up to your pool – people whose number you received for exactly this purpose. Put that in the sign-up form, define a fair calling window (on construction typically 06:30 to 19:00) and implement opt-out properly. Data processing runs on Swiss servers, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified and revFADP compliant; on request as an on-premise deployment.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly do I have a replacement for a site?
The agent calls up to 20 numbers at once. A pool of 80 former temps is covered in roughly 15 to 20 minutes. If you start the run the evening before rather than in the morning, you have the answers before dinner instead of during the coffee break.
Can the agent check licences and qualifications?
Yes. You define what the job requires – crane licence, forklift licence, scaffolding or formwork experience. The agent asks specifically, captures the answer in a structured way and flags candidates where something is missing or expired.
Does it work with staff who barely speak German or English?
Yes. Besides Swiss German and standard German the agent also speaks Italian, French, English, Portuguese, Spanish and more. You store the preferred language on the contact and the call runs in it automatically.
Can I also use it to cancel when a job falls through?
It is just as well suited to that. In bad weather you start a cancellation run: everyone scheduled for tomorrow is informed, questions are captured, and anyone who does not pick up additionally receives a text message.
In short
On a building site it is not the size of the pool that decides, but how quickly it can be reached. An AI phone agent turns a list nobody can work through in an emergency into a tool that delivers a reliable answer in twenty minutes – with licence checks, language selection and clean documentation.
